As funny as it can be silly...

With My Spy Dad, fans and detractors of Wong Jing won't be disappointed. The usual qualities and lacks are all back after several disappointing movies. This time, no hesitation, it's typical cantonese humor, just like in the golden years of Jing's productions. Even if it doesn't really match with his best work (like Boys are Easy), this new comedy will surely produce some heavy laughs.

There is no real surprise in this production, the story is totally silly and uncoherent, the directing is quite poor, the cast is very impressive and enjoying the silly characters they have to play, the jokes are so silly they often become funny. Everything is not working, you can be disappointed by the low budget or poor use of the concept (the movie takes place mainly in Tony Leung's house, instead of going here and there like in any typical spy movie). But this is typical Wong Jing's stuff, nobody should be really surprised by the qualities and lacks of the movie.

And there are some qualities. The cast is impressive, with some very experienced actors having plenty of fun with stupid characters. Tony Leung Ka-Fai and Eric Kot really stand out, with plenty of overacting. Tony has another imitation of Bruce Lee, probably the longest of his career, and Eric Kot is delivering an incredible performance as the bad guy of Enter the Dragon. Some other actors are correctly used (Jordan Chan and Chaptman To), some others are just here for commercial reasons (Gillian and Edison). You will find the usual parodies (Matrix of course, Bruce Lee as always), some decent specials effects, and surprisingly, almost no lavatory humor.

Overall, it's a good comedy for people who accept brainless humor. The story could have been much better, but at least there is no boring moments in the movie. It should be watched at least for the impressive cast having a lot of fun.
